Another Free Market Success Story

I am a fan of laissez faire capitalism on a global scale. Let’s drop all the tariffs, quotas, and price controls and let each nation excel at what it does best. It’s the best formula for shared prosperity and peace, based on widespread interdependence.
To that end, I am reasonably tolerant when I call an American company’s support number and get someone in Bangalore. But holy crap! Are these folks getting any training whatsoever before they get the headphones and the cubicle?
Last week, I had a not-unreasonable-yet-fairly-unusual request to make of a prominent U.S. software company. My experience would have left a lesser man in tears.
The first two customer service reps – “Ricky” and “Melissa” (yeah right) – put me on hold to research my request and then, after several minutes, disconnected me. On my third try, “Donnie” assured me that everything would be taken care of to my satisfaction. A week later, I am still waiting for that to happen and I’m beginning to not like my chances.
But it’s still a successful example of the free market. Instead of snotty Americans frustrating and disconnecting me, befuddled Indians can do the exact same thing for a third of the cost! We are all winners here!
