Recession? What Recession?

It should be painfully obvious to all that the U.S. is in a sharp recession and has been for many months. The government avoids using the “R” word whenever possible, placing it on the same plateau of inappropriateness as the “N” word or the “C” word. After all, we can’t have the people panicking! So pay no attention to the 50-foot ape climbing the Empire State Building!
What got us here is good ol’ greed and the overarching tendency of Americans to live beyond their means. Ironically, that same tendency is the most likely candidate to bring us back out of this economic slowdown. It’s so much more fun to imitate success by buying new cars, nice furniture, and Caribbean vacations before you’ve actually saved the funds.
The best statement I’ve ever heard summarizing the psychology of the American consumer is this:
“They spend money they don’t have, to buy things they don’t need, to impress people they don’t like.”
