Rants Of A Future Curmudgeon

Want to Save the Environment? Then Stop Reproducing!

Posted on | December 7, 2008 | 9 Comments

Every time there is a world conference to discuss global warming, depletion of natural resources, destruction of the rain forests, etc., one topic seems to be completely taboo: population control.

The reason, I presume, that no one wishes to bring up this untouchable subject is that to do so would be to take on the Catholic Church and, in many regards, human nature itself.

We need to accept the obvious fact: there are more humans on earth than can be adequately sustained if we wish to maintain the balance of our ecosystem.

Other than forcing the world’s inhabitants to relinquish their rights to reproduce and assigning these rights to a governing body (ugh), I don’t have a viable solution. But stop trying to sell me on the idea that I should buy local produce, install solar panels, and “reduce my carbon footprint.” People who believe that these microscopic steps will un-doom our planet are just bad at math.

Does it really matter if we delay the annihilation of our planet by a year or two?

Here’s something to contemplate for the “go green” crowd with minivans full of offspring: choosing to have an extra child will do more damage to the environment than you would prevent in a thousand years of filling your recycling bins and biking to work on Fridays.

Strange how they can recommend any number of lifestyle changes but it’s utterly taboo to even hint that you consider limiting family size or (gasp) going childless. After all, Gawd said to spawn like rabbits on fertility drugs and if we don’t humanity will die off! (Which is why we can’t let Teh Gays get married, you know, since they don’t get each other preggers…)

I hope it’s sometime before “Soylent Green” that people wake up and smell the coffee. The Duggars are not good role models.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. This is so painfully obvious that it is a testament to the indoctrination of having to reproduce that nobody in the main stream media has said it yet.

Someday I will inform a militant environmentalist – with three kids – that despite driving an SUV and tossing plastic bottles in the trash, I have done far more to save the environment than they have. If just to see the expression of self-righteous indignation that will inevitably come over their face.

Your eloquent argument has persuaded me. I hereby officially change my position on the entire matter.

    Thank you for posting this.
I have been saying the exact same thing at every occasion, but people stare at me as if I was crazy. I go to all green fairs and events in the area, and end up feeling depressed when I see the ridiculous Peruvian/Indian/African attire, the uneffective technology, and heavy marketing, the pressure to ride a bike on the dangerous road, while my income taxes still encourage families to populate our crowded beaches and destroy hills and forests to build their houses.

“while my income taxes still encourage families to populate our crowded beaches and destroy hills and forests to build their houses.”

Too true. People get so defensive if I talk about our population problem in my community. It’s like they think I’m trying to personally attack each and every one of them for their perspective.
It urks me even more to hear people complain about their kids and then talk about having another one.

I was at the farmers market in the spring and it was JAMMED with babies. I said to my roomate “You know what would make this place less crowded?”, “what?” she said. “Condoms” I replied.

It’s sad how socially acceptable it has to be to reproduce at a certain age. Half the time I think it’s because people are bored of their lives and they’re just at that age where they “need” a baby to fill that void.
Pay the extra buck and ADOPT! There’s enough babies on this planet that need raising!

Look like you wrote this a long time ago. I just wrote something similar on my blog liberalpinheads.com about a new study to go green – no kids

Overpopulation is indeed the issue and also one nobody will really talk about. However, I rather expect that nature will eventually get around to dealing with it. In other words, the human population is due for a big die-back. It probably won’t be one particular cause but several that just happen to come together. It may well be very good for the human race in the long run – we never really seem to learn lessons until it really hurts.
